Who is a sculptor?
A sculptor is a person who practices the art of sculpture as a profession. They create and design 3D structures using clay, plastic, glass, paper fabric, various metals, wood, stone, ice etc.
Hard materials are generally carved with tools called chisels. Different kinds of chisels are used to carve away the stone, shape the forms, and finish the details. Depending on the materials used, a sculptor may also use techniques ranging from sewing to molding to cutting. Sometimes they also use molding, casting, welding and firing to get the desired structures. Sculpting as an art is not simple. It requires craftsmanship and expertise to use tools. It takes time and practice to carve out perfect structures.
Sculptors are usually self employed and may work part time sculpture and have another full time job. People with higher qualifications also take up teaching assignments at various levels. Sculpture have to market themselves and create a name for themselves. Usually one has to make a portfolio of the pictures of their sculptures and one may have website of one’s work. Sculptures usually try to get their work displayed in local artist's galleries or museums. Many sculptors work long hours. One who perseveres and has a real passion and talent for original sculpting is the most likely to receive average or above average payment, as well as recognition, for his or her sculpture work.
