In small mining organisation the starting salary could be anywhere from 1.5 Lakhs to 1.8 lakhs per year. While a package of 3.5 lakhs to 6 lakhs per years can be expected for those entering with higher qualifications and landing a job in places like oil industries.
Career Prospects
Geologists usually find employment in Geological Survey of India, Central and state groundwater authorities, Indian Bureau of Mines, government mining departments (directorates of mines and geology), mining companies, oil exploration companies, TV channels like National Geographic, Discovery or Fox History. They also work for research organizations like Oceanography, Central Road Research Institute, Pollution control organizations etc. Teaching and research in universities and colleges is another option.
Famous Personalities
M.S. Krishnan, Padma Bhushan, was a famous Indian geologist. After completing his fellowship in England, he took a job at the Geological Survey of India. He also taught Geology at Presidency College, Chennai, Calcutta and another institution in Dehradun. He served as the director of Indian Bureau of Mines and Indian School of Mines. He authored two famous books among which one is the well known ‘Introduction to Geology of India’. He also played a huge role in the founding of National Geophysical Research Institute.
A day in life
A hydro geologists would spend a lot of time of the year camping near the water resource. Their days start early with sample collections and work goes on in the camp and after coming back to the research center. The rest of the year might be spent in the HQ where the collected data has to be put into use for research. Geologists would also have to deal with a lot of paper work and administrative tasks at the HQ. Geologist would get ample opportunities to travel to unusual places and work with many people from diverse disciplines.
