Introduction

"To a naturalist nothing is indifferent; the humble moss that creeps upon the stone is equally interesting as the lofty pine which so beautifully adorns the valley or the mountain: but to a naturalist who is reading in the face of the rocks the annals of a former world, the mossy covering which obstructs his view, and renders indistinguishable the different species of stone, is no less than a serious subject of regret."

— James Hutton

If you have the aptitude and wish for yourself, a life of a naturalist, then Geology is one area where you can lose yourself.

Primarily, geologists study the earth, the matter, the structure and its constituents. They study how materials are formed and study the earth to find valuable rocks or minerals. This means, they study the rocks, the water surfaces, natural phenomenon occurring on the surface of the earth and their causes. Geology is a large area of study with specializations like hydrology, volcanology, mineralogy, structural geology etc. A prospective geologist could choose of any of the specializations. However, as an undergraduate student training to become a geologist, one can expect to take up coursework in physics, mathematics, biology as well as chemistry. In other words, it’s important for a prospective geologist to be fond of science.

As mentioned above, the field is quite diverse and a geologist may have to work in various, different environments. As a geologist, one could be working in a project that demands mapping techniques and GIS skills or surveying a mineral structure or rock to determine water availability in the nearest area. Natural resources like oil, gas and minerals are extracted and refined with the help of geologists. Geologists could also be working for government agencies, mining companies, construction companies and meteorology department as these fields require geologists for various tasks like performing geo physical or geo chemical tests and collection and deciphering of huge amounts of data.

Geologists usually find opportunities to work with experts in various other professions. For instance, a geologists working in a natural resource preservation project might have the opportunity to work with biologists, a geologist working on a heritage site conservation project might work closely with archaeologists. Also, it’s important to note that not all geologists would have to engage in field work. Depending on the nature of one’s specialization and job nature, a geologist may also be involved in research work that is to be done from a work station.
