Introduction

"The sociological imagination enables us to grasp history and biography and the relations between the two within society. That is its task and its promise."

— C. Wright Mills

What do sociologists do?

Sociologists are social scientists who study groups of people. These groups range from small families to mobs and even whole nations. Sociologists analyze ethnic and religious groups and political and business organizations. They also focus on the behavior of group members and on the ways that groups interact with one another. Sociologists study specific groups with the ultimate goal of establishing general laws and theories that can explain human social behavior. Most of the sociologists teach and do research and also get employment with government departments. Sociologists generally specialize in one or more areas within a specific field of sociology like medical sociology, rural sociology etc. Some sociologists work for government agencies or private social service agencies and may provide counseling services or do community planning. They also deal with welfare and rehabilitation. They also work in public health and also find employment with organizations.
