Physics is one of the core subjects for education, research, atomic and space organisations. It has great commercial and military value. Physicists work in research and development with specialized branches. Elementary research in physics finds application in space programs and automobile industry. Bio physicists and chemical physicists get employment in government and private research and development organisations. Applied physics is the backbone of modern electronics and communication and medical field.
Use of radiations lasers and magnetic technologies in cure of many diseases is the result of research in applied physics. The high technology equipment used in diagnostic and therapeutic applications is often designed and maintained by medical physicists. Biophysics uses the concepts and tools of physical chemistry and molecular physics to define and analyse the structures, exegetics, dynamics and interactions of biological molecules. This field of research is leading to designs of new classes of instrumentation for use in the expanding field of genomics, proteomics and clinical diagnostics for a variety of biological markers.
Physicists are employed by academic institutions, government laboratories, and private industries, with the largest employer being the industry. Physicists also use their skills in other fields like engineering and computers. Some physicists take up additional careers where their knowledge of physics can be combined with further training in other disciplines, such as patent law in industry or private practice. In the United States, a majority of those in the privatesections having a physics degree actually work outside the fields of physics, astronomy and engineering altogether.
Government work may involve setting standards at the ISI which is important for all physics research. Government jobs pay well, but you will never become wealthy being a government physicist. But government work may also involve working in the weapons industry. Industrial work like semi conductors and computers related research will provide the employment in future. Many physics students enter into business, either starting their own ventures or reaching the top levels in industry (they learn management with experience). In fact, some of the wealthiest people in the electronics industry came from physics/engineering backgrounds and then switched to management or set up their own corporation.
Post graduates in physics / applied physics ae also eligible for Combined Geo Scientist and Geologist exam conducted by UPSC.
Teaching in university and doing research is another good option.
Famous Personalities
In the present time Stephen Hawking (1942 -): who provided, with Roger Penrose, theorems regarded the occurrence of gravitational singularities in the framework of general relativity, theoretically predicted that black holes should emit radiation (Hawking radiation).
Michael Faraday, was uneducated apprentice, but he went on to revolutionize modern civilization with electric motors and dynamos.
