Film Producer and Distributor
Introduction
— Walt Disney Film
Producers are people who look after financing and marketing of the film. Basically they are attached to a film right from the tome of its inception, like selecting the script etc and then they oversee everything so that it gets completed in the budget and can be marketed at a good price. Some creative people after direction etc turn into producers or business people having keen interest in films become producers. Any which ways it is better to acquire some related qualifications to get ahead in this field.
What do film producers do?
Film producers are generally the initiators of a film project and thus they are involved in every decision, like story, director, budget etc. They manage all the resources and location etc for the film. Basically film producers are entrepreneurs who take the film project from the initial stage to the release stage and make money (or loose money) in the process. They take all the big decisions in the film and sometimes creative decisions also.
Film distributor is either a person or a company who release films in the market. Their task is to ensure that it reaches the maximum audience. They are marketing experts and have a keen sense of publicity and promotion to bring the audience to the theatres. They are the ones who with cinema operators and with studio people make a film available for the audience. A distributor may do this directly, if the distributor owns the theaters or film distribution networks, or through theatrical exhibitors and other sub-distributors. A limited distributor may deal only with particular products, such as DVDs or Blu-ray, or may act in a particular country or market. Often they make the film available in various formats like a DVD which is widely available or on TV channels. The idea is to make maximum profits out of the film.
