Introduction

Fisheries Scientists study and manage the fishery resources, which may involve shellfish or aquatic mammals as well as fish. Fisheries scientists are engaged in management, use, and conservation of aquatic plants and animals. As researchers, managers, administrators, or educators, they use their expertise and knowledge in biology, ecology, and other sciences to enhance recreational, commercial, and aqua cultural fisheries resources.

What do Fisheries Scientists do?

They work as researchers or managers and deal with aquatic species or their habitat. They are involved with commercial harvests of fish, crabs, shrimps, or oysters, or study fish populations. They also work in applied research in government and private sector in regulating the commercial fishing, creation of areas for recreation and protection of endangered species. Some scientists also teach and carry out research in universities and research centers. They also work in conservation and in commercial fish farms.
